Your first aid certificate has expired: what now?

Updated 2026-08-21 · First Aid Training Newcastle

You do not start from scratch, but there is no shortcut either — there is no such thing as a renewal that skips the course. You book the unit your role requires again. Which unit depends on what has actually lapsed.

Work out what has lapsed

Two dates matter. First aid is generally treated as current for three years; CPR is refreshed annually. If only the CPR year has passed and the first aid certificate is still inside three years, HLTAID009 CPR at 1.5 hours is usually all that is needed.

If the first aid certificate itself is past three years, book HLTAID011 Provide First Aid. It includes the CPR unit, so it resets both. If your role is in education and care, the equivalent is HLTAID012.

There is no "renewal" that avoids the course

Because these are nationally recognised units, currency comes from completing the unit and being assessed, not from an administrative renewal. Any provider offering a certificate without a practical assessment is not delivering the unit.

That also means the time it takes is the same as the first time: a short online component, then one practical session, with the statement of attainment issued the same day.

If you have lost the certificate rather than let it expire

That is a different problem with an easier answer. A replacement copy can be issued — see the lost or missing certificates page on the main CBD College site rather than rebooking a course you have already completed.

Common questions

Do I have to redo the whole course if my certificate expired?

You redo the unit, but which unit depends on what lapsed. If only CPR currency has gone and your first aid certificate is still inside three years, the 1.5-hour CPR unit is usually enough.

Is there a grace period?

Treat the date on the certificate as the date. Employers, sites and insurers generally look at that, so book before it passes rather than after.

I have lost my certificate, not let it expire.

You do not need to redo the course. A replacement can be issued — see the lost or missing certificates page on cbdcollege.edu.au.
